Diaphragm Pumps are often known as Membrane pumps, Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps (AOD) or Pneumatic Diaphragm Pump) is a positive displacement pump that makes use of a mixture of the reciprocating motion of a rubber, thermoplastic or sometimes teflon diaphragm and appropriate valves on either side of the diaphragm (check valve, butterfly valves, flap valves, or any other form of shut-off valves) to pump a fluid.

Those in which the diaphragm is sealed with one side in the liquid to be pumped, as well as the other in air or hydraulic fluid. The diaphragm is flexed, making the volume of the pump chamber to increase and decrease. A pair of non-return check valves stop reverse flow of the fluid.
Those using volumetric positive displacement in which the prime mover of the diaphragm is electro-mechanical, running through a crank or geared motor drive, or just completely mechanical, for instance with a lever or handle. This process flexes the diaphragm by means of simple mechanised motion, then one side of the diaphragm is open to air.

Those employing several unsealed diaphragms with the fluid to be pumped on either side, The diaphragm(s) again are flexed, creating the volume to adjust.
Whenever the volume of a chamber of either kind of pump is increased (the diaphragm moving up), the air pressure reduces, and then fluid is pulled into the chamber. When the chamber pressure later raises from reduced volume (the diaphragm moving down), the fluid formerly drawn in is pushed out. Lastly, the diaphragm moving up once again draws fluid into the chamber, completing the sequence. This motion is comparable to that of the cylinder in an internal combustion engine .
