A float switch is the simplest way to start and stop a pump automatically. The float tilts as the liquid level rises or falls, making or breaking a contact to switch the pump or trigger an alarm. Non-mercury designs utilise a weighted ball that activates a microswitch, eliminating the need to handle or dispose of hazardous waste. Built-in hysteresis prevents nuisance switching on a turbulent surface.
General-purpose paddle floats, such as the LR03, are compact and cost-effective, and suit clean water, grey water, rainwater harvesting, irrigation tanks and sump wells. Heavy-duty weighted floats, such as the LRW8, are built for sewage and wastewater: the internal weight cuts through crust layers and the tear-drop profile sheds solids. Check specific gravity, temperature and cable compatibility against the liquid in your tank.
Cable length sets how far the float can sit below its mounting point, so match it to tank depth and your switching levels. Check the contact rating against your pump: larger motors should be switched through a relay, contactor or control panel. Floats without an integral weight need a tether or counterweight to set the switching angle.
