Every AODD pump discharges in pulses. In a short run to an open tank, nobody notices. Put a flowmeter, a filter housing, a spray header or a long pipe run downstream and those pressure swings start shaking joints loose, upsetting readings and fatiguing welds. A pulsation dampener sits on the discharge and evens the flow out, which is usually far cheaper than repeatedly repairing what the vibration has damaged.
Our range covers connection sizes from 3/8 inch through to 3 inch, in BSP, NPT and flanged porting. Bodies are available in aluminium, stainless steel, polypropylene, PVDF, PTFE, polyethylene and acetal, so you can match the dampener to whatever the pump is already handling. Diaphragm options run from nitrile, EPDM and Santoprene through to PTFE and PTFE-faced combinations for aggressive chemistry. Around 68 units in the range carry an ATEX rating for use in classified areas.
Inside, a dampener is really just two chambers separated by a flexible diaphragm or bladder, with compressed air or nitrogen on one side acting as a spring. On the discharge stroke, the pressure spike pushes liquid in and compresses the gas; between strokes, the gas pushes it back out. Some designs manage their charge automatically from the plant air supply; others are pre-charged and adjusted manually.

It absorbs the pressure spikes created by a positive displacement pump and releases that energy back into the line as the pressure falls. The result is a much smoother, more consistent discharge flow. That protects downstream pipework, instruments and fittings from vibration, water hammer and premature fatigue.
Not always. Short runs into open tanks or vessels usually tolerate pulsation perfectly well. You should seriously consider one if you have a long discharge line, a flowmeter or analyser downstream, a filter or membrane housing, a spray or dosing point, or if you can physically see the pipework moving when the pump runs.
As a general rule, fit it on the discharge line as close to the pump outlet as the layout allows. The closer it sits to the source of the pulsation, the more effectively it damps the spike before it reaches anything sensitive. Inlet stabilisers are a separate product, mounted on the suction side to reduce acceleration head loss.
Sizing depends on your pump displacement per stroke, the acceptable pressure variation at the equipment you are protecting, and the layout and stiffness of the pipework. Matching the dampener connection to the pump port size is a sensible starting point, but it is not the whole picture.
