Magnetic Drive Pumps

What Are Magnetic Drive Pumps?

Magnetic drive pumps (also called mag-drive or sealless pumps) use a magnetic coupling between the motor and the impeller, eliminating the need for a mechanical shaft seal. This creates a leak-free design ideal for corrosive, toxic or sensitive fluids.

How They Work

An external magnet on the motor drives an internal magnet connected to the impeller. These magnets are separated by a non-magnetic containment shell, keeping all wetted parts fully sealed from the environment.

Key Advantages

  • Leak-free, sealless design
  • Low maintenance with fewer wear parts
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Improved safety with no emissions or leakage
  • Long service life and high reliability

Common Applications

  • Chemical processing
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Water treatment
  • Laboratories and OEM systems
  • Food and beverage production

How to Select the Right Magnetic Drive Pump

  1. Identify the chemical, viscosity and temperature of the fluid
  2. Determine required flow rate and head
  3. Check material compatibility (PP, stainless steel, PVDF, PTFE and others)
  4. Match motor power and speed to system requirements
  5. Ensure suitable maintenance access and availability of spare parts

A magnetic drive pump uses a magnetic coupling instead of a mechanical seal, creating a completely leak-free pumping chamber.

No. With no seals to replace, maintenance is typically much lower than standard centrifugal pumps.

No. Solids can damage internal components, so mag-drive pumps are recommended only for clean liquids.

No. Running dry can overheat and damage internal bearings and the containment shell.
