A Guide For Choosing Your Water Supply & Distribution Pump

Whether you’re managing residential water supply, industrial distribution networks, or emergency water transfer, selecting the right pump is crucial for reliable and efficient operation. With a wide variety of pumps available, the decision-making process can feel overwhelming. This guide covers the types of water supply and distribution pumps we offer to help you find the perfect solution for your needs. 6 Things to Consider When Choosing Your Water Supply & Distribution Pump

When selecting a water supply or distribution pump, these six factors determine the right choice:

1. Flow Rate

How much water do you need to move per minute? Measure in LPM (Litres Per Minute), GPM (gallons per minute), or m³/hr (cubic meters per hour). A home might need 20-50 LPM, while a commercial building could need 500+ LPM.

2. Head & Pressure

How high does the water need to travel, and what pressure is needed at the point of use? Garden irrigation might need 2-3 bar; a tall building could need 5-6 bar or more. This determines whether you need a simple pump or a booster set.

3. Water Source

Where is the water coming from? Wells or boreholes require submersible pumps. Mains supply or elevated tanks allow surface-mounted pumps. Surface water sources may need self-priming capability. Your source type determines the pump category.

4. Water Quality

Is the water clean or does it contain sediment and solids? Mains water is clean; borehole or flood water may contain particles. Some pumps handle solids up to 10mm, others handle big solids well over 20mm. Exceeding this rating causes clogging and failure.

5. Duty Cycle

Will the pump run intermittently (residential home, occasional use) or continuously (commercial building, 24/7 operation)? Intermittent-duty pumps won’t survive continuous operation. This fundamentally affects motor type and sizing.

6. Power & Location

What power is available at your site, and where will the pump be installed? Single-phase (230V) for homes, three-phase for industry. Indoor pump houses offer flexibility; outdoor installations need weather protection. Remote locations may need engine-driven options.

Our Pump Recommendations

We’ve broken our recommendations down by application. Jump to the one that fits your needs:

Residential & Domestic Water Supply

Perfect For Homes, Small Properties & Rural Dwellings

Residential water supply applications typically require modest flow rates with consistent, reliable pressure. These applications often involve transferring water from storage tanks, boreholes, or mains supply to household points of use. Reliability and low noise are important factors for domestic installations.

Submersible Borehole Pumps are ideal for homes drawing water from boreholes or deep wells. These pumps are submerged directly in the water source, eliminating priming issues and allowing effective suction lift from considerable depths. They’re efficient, compact, and ideal where space is limited.
